Evacuation knapsack : Miss Elizabeth M Jaffray, Geelong Church of England Girl's Grammar School
Description
Khaki cotton drill knapsack of private manufacture with two back straps made from a double layer of fabric reinforced with lines of stitching in a zig-zag pattern. There is a flap with two button holes and four tortoise-shell pattern plastic buttons on the front. 'BETTY JAFFRAY. / GEELONG. C. OF E. GRAMMAR SCHOOL. / THE HERMITAGE.' is neatly written in black ink at the top of the front panel, under the flap.
History / Summary
This type of evacuation knapsack was made by parents for their children, to a pattern printed in Circular EV.42, which was distributed by the Victorian State Emergency Services Evacuation Committee. Parents were required to stock the knapsack with food and clothing, so their children were prepared for a quick evacuation if it had been required. This knapsack belonged to Elizabeth (Betty) Jaffray, a student at Geelong Church of England Girl's Grammar School.
