Description

INTRODUCTION BY FEMALE ANNOUNCER: "Sergeant George York of 32 Loch Maree Street, Kingsford NSW".
MESSAGE BY SERGEANT GEORGE YORK: "Hello Perkie darling, how are you, and how is my son Bruce? We're having a fine time in New York, it's just like Kings Cross on a giant scale. I've missed you all very much and wish you were here to see it all. I have missed everyone at home very much and look forward to the mail which arrives regularly. People are all very kind to us, both here and in Canada. We're all fit and well and I hope you have looked after yourself. Give my love to Mum and Dad and all at home, especially you and Bruce. This is George York saying, good-bye darling".

George York enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) on 10 October 1942. This message is believed to have been recorded in July 1943 whilst Sergeant York (428858) was on two weeks leave in New York from his aircrew training in Canada. Sergeant York was promoted to the rank of Pilot Officer and flew as a bomb aimer attached to Royal Air Force (RAF) 102 'Ceylon' Squadron flying Halifax bombers out of Pocklington near York in England. He was killed over Germany on the evening of 12-13 August 1944.
