Description
Balikpapan, South Borneo. One of a series of Japanese portraits of naval personnel found by members of the 2/5th Australian Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery (RAA), in a damaged tunnel near Orr's Junction, Balikpapan. The photographs were taken in the vicinity of Orr's Junction and the personnel are probably of 22 Base Force (Navy) under the command of Vice Admiral M. Kamada, Supreme Commander of Japanese Forces in South Borneo. This Force opposed the landing of the 7th Australian Division. Note the two servicemen in the front are holding a bunch of bananas and a coconut? and the man at left, sitting on the rail, is holding a dog. (Donor J. McCredie)
