A view of Pear Trench and the slope over which the Australians and Americans advanced on the morning of 4 July 1918, in the battle of Hamel. The enemy machine gunner, seen dead in the centre, just behind the trench, caused many casualties to the attacking troops as they came over the horizon on the right.
