Qualification badge: Signaller 'S', RAF - Flying Officer M D Freudenstein RAAF, 640 Squadron RAF
Description
Official RAF pattern Signaller's 'S' brevet introduced in 1943. Embroidered brevet has a white wing, with a white 'S' within a light brown wreath, all on a black background.
History / Summary
Associated with 421324 Flying Officer Morris Dolf Freudenstein RAAF, who served with 640 Squadron RAF during World War Two. The 'S' brevet was an official issue to overcome the problem of full trade qualification recognition, for Warrant Officers or Officers with Wireless Air Gunner qualifications, after the ommission of the 'sparks' badge. The 'S' brevet overcame the unofficial practice of wearing the 'WAG' brevet.
