Brighton, Tas. 1940. Portrait of TX3350 Private (Pte) Allan Clifford Chick, 2/40th Battalion. Pte Chick enlisted on 17 June 1940, embarked at Darwin for Timor on 7 December 1941, where he was captured and taken prisoner by the Japanese. He was a Prisoner of War (POW) in Java until May 1944. En route to Japan, the ship in which he was travelling was torpedoed and he was among 212 survivors. He was taken to Nagasaki and worked in the Mitsubishi foundry. He later served in the British Commonwealth Occupation Force and also with the United Nations forces in Korea until March 1953. He was repatriated to Australia and discharged in May 1953. (Donor A.
