Description

Aerial view showing Hell's Spit, Ari Burnu, Beach and Shrapnel Valley cemeteries, White Gully, Shrapnel Valley, McCay's Hill, Victoria Gully. North Beach, Reserve Gully, West end of Plugge's Plateau. This is one of a number of aerial photographs taken over the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915 by the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). One of a series of 62 photographs acquired by C.E.W. Bean from a number of sources in the 1920s. None were taken by Bean, but acquired to augment his own photographs. All were registered in his personal (C.B.) series and carry a C.B. number. All were subsequently registered in the AWM G Series under one accession number, G01534, and use a series of alphabetic extensions, commencing with G01534A, to accommodate the 62 items. Combined with G01534ae, both images and a detailed key, were published in the Photographic Record of the War, Volume 12 of the Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-18. See plate 123.
