Lieutenant General Sir William Birdwood, commanding I Anzac Corps (centre facing camera), at a tree felling and log chopping contest between Australian, Canadian and New Zealander soldiers in the Nieppe Forest, near the village of La Motte, 6.5 kilometres south east of Hazebrouck. This image is a frame enlargement from a 35mm motion picture film that has been cropped up along the bottom edge. This scene is included in AWM films F00047 and F00050, although this particular frame is not in either film. The original film for this scene was 'shot' by the British Official Cinematographer Geoffrey Malins. One of a series of 62 photographs acquired by C.E.W. Bean from a number of sources in the 1920s. None were taken by Bean, but acquired to augment his own photographs. All were registered in his personal (C.B.) series and carry a C.B. number. All were subsequently registered in the AWM G Series under one accession number, G01534, and use a series of alphabetic extensions, commencing with G01534A, to accommodate the 62 items.
