Germany. Prisoner of War (POW) identification photograph of NX3856 Lieutenant Leslie Edgecliffe Tilney, 2/1st Battalion, Australian Infantry. Lieutenant Tilney, aged 36, died on 5 February 1944, as a POW, after being captured defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He was the son of Colonel Leslie E. Tilney DSO VD, and Lurline Tilney, and the husband of Janet Elizabeth Tilney, of North Fitzroy, Vic. He is buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany, Section 4, Row B, Plot 11.
