NSW. Paybook photograph of NX4052 Private William James Rowswell, 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion, Australian Infantry. Private Rowswell, aged 34, died while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion on 20 May 1941. He was the son of William Thomas Rowswell and Matilda Grace Rowswell and the husband of Maud Bridget Rowswell, of Glebe Point, NSW. He is buried in the Suda Bay Cemetery Section 1, Row B, Plot 11.
