NSW. Paybook photograph of NX5459 Private Herbert Edward Lascelles Ryrie, 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion, Australian Infantry. Private Ryrie, aged 39, died while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion on 21 May 1941. He was the son of Francis Lascelles Ryrie and Constance Margaret Amelia Ryrie, of Narromine, NSW. He is buried in the Suda Bay Cemetery Section 1, Row C, Plot 19.
