NSW. Paybook photograph of NX5974 Private John Ernest Withers, 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion, Australian Infantry. Private Withers, aged 24, died while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion on 20 May 1941. He was the son of Walter and Ellen Withers.
