NSW. Paybook photograph of NX7798 Private Sidney George Swinnerton, 2/1st Battalion, Australian Infantry. Private Swinnerton, aged 23, died on 19 August 1941, as a Prisoner of War (POW), after being captured in Retino Aerodrome on 30 May 1941, while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He was the son of George and May Swinnerton, of Stafford, England. He is buried in the Phaleron War Cemetery Section 2, Row E, Plot 11.
