NSW. Paybook photograph of NX8461 Private Bernard Driscoll Hesse, 2/1st Battalion, Australian Infantry. Private Hesse, aged 28, died on 14 August 1941, as a Prisoner of War (POW), after being captured defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He was the son of James Francis and Annie Hesse, of Elizabeth Bay, NSW. He is buried in the Phaleron War Cemetery Section 2, Row E, Plot 10.
