Prisoner of War (POW) identification photograph of NX8912 Private John Thomas Burke, 2/1st Battalion, Australian Infantry. Private Burke, aged 28, died on 18 April 1945, as a POW (no 23843) in Stalag VIIIb in Teschen, Poland, after being captured defending Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He was the son of John Joseph Bede Burke and Florence May Burke, of Tamworth, NSW, and is buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany, Section 4, Row A, Plot 18.
