NSW. Paybook photograph of NX12877 Gunner Douglas Haig Burling, 2/3rd Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. Gunner Burling, aged 25, died on 13 December 1943, as a Prisoner of War (POW), after being captured on 1 June 1941, while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He was the son of James Henry and Ethel May Burling, of Lakemba, NSW. He is buried in the Cracow Rakowicki Cemetery, Poland, , Poland, Section 2, Row A, Plot 11.
