NSW. May 1940. Paybook photograph of NX14168 Signalman George Roylance Coombes, 6th Division Signals, Australian Corps of Signals. Signalman Coombes, aged 18, died while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion on 29 May 1941. He was the son of Charles Joseph and Ada Lavinia Coombes, of Cremorne, NSW. He is buried in the Suda Bay Cemetery Section 1, Row A, Plot 20.
