NSW. 1940. Paybook photograph of NX23840 Corporal James Patterson Baird, 2/1st Battalion, Australian Infantry. Corporal Baird, aged 40, died while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion on 20 May 1941. He was the son of John and Hannah Baird, and the husband of Martha Baird, of Kogarah, NSW. He is buried in the Suda Bay Cemetery Section 5, Row A, Plot 12.
