Vic. Paybook photograph of VX114 Lieutenant John Noel Learmonth (Mentioned in Despatches), 2/3rd Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. Lieutenant Learmonth, aged 28, died on 10 May 1944, as a Prisoner of War (POW), after being captured on 30 May 1941, while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He was the son of Noel Fulford Learmonth and Edith Mary Learmonth, of Tyrendarra, Vic. He is buried in the Hanover War Cemetery, Germany, Section 7, Row F, Plot 16. His brother Wing Commander Charles Cuthbertson Learmonth DFC and Bar, 14 Squadron RAAF, was killed in a flying accident on 6 January 1944.
