Paybook photograph of VX13302 Private William Matthew Mitchell (Mentioned in Despatches), 2/8th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Private Mitchell, aged 24, died of wounds received while trying to escape from Stalag XIIIV, where he was a prisoner of war (POW), on 14 August 1942. He was captured defending Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Phyllis Mitchell of Bendigo, Vic, and is buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany, Section 4, Row A, Plot 20.
