Vic. Paybook photograph of VX14805 Signalman Herbert John Hughes (served as Lionel Jackson), 6th Division Signals, Australian Corps of Signals. Signalman Hughes, aged 30, died of wounds on 13 June 1941, as a Prisoner of War (POW), after being captured defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He was the son of John Edward and Lucy Maude Hughes, of Collingwood, Vic. He is buried in the Phaleron War Cemetery Section 3, Row A, Plot 5.
