Vic. Paybook photograph of VX16659 Private Arthur Smith, 2/8th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Private Smith, aged 36, died on 25 September 1941, as a Prisoner of War (POW), after being captured defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He was the son of John T. Smith and Martha Smith, and the husband of Mrs G. I. Smith, of Gembrook, Vic. He is buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany, Section 3, Row A, Plot 25.
