Prisoner of War (POW) identification photograph of WX2218 Private (Pte) Alphonsus Thomas Hegarty, 2/2nd Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps. Pte Hegarty, aged 30, died on 4 November 1941 as a POW (no 12629) in Stalag IIId in Berlin-Steglitz, Germany, after being captured defending Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He was the son of John and Mary Hegarty, and is commemorated on the Athens Memorial Face 12. (Photograph supplied by the Army's Soldier Career Management Agency.
