Cobbers
This sculpture depicts two Australian infantrymen. One is standing about to throw a grenade, while the other kneeling with his rifle in both hands. This is the original plaster version of 'Cobbers'. In 1932 Anderson approached the Australian War Memorial with the notion of producing copies of the work to sell to the public. After 'testing the market' and succesfully selling two bronze copies through the Memorial's travelling salesman, Mr Swenson, more copies were created. Later in 1932, Anderson agreed to sell the original work (and copyright) to the Memorial. The Memorial engaged Melbourne founder, E.J.Gregory, to cast more sculptures in bronze, which he did from a lead model. From 1932 to 1940, approximately 91 copies of 'Cobbers' were cast. They were not editions and were not numbered.
