Description
Fanning Island. 7 September 1914. One of the Officers from the German ship Nurnberg (seen in the background) on the beach on Fanning Island. Directly behind the Officer are the boats which carried a body of German Officers and Marines on to Fanning Island. The Nurnberg, attended by a collier, both flying the French flag, were sent to Fanning Island by Vice Admiral Count von Spee to destroy the Cable Relay Station, cutting out the British communications network in the Pacific. Repairs to the cable were carried out quickly and communications were restored within a fortnight. (Donor J. Luscombe)
