Description
Fanning Island. September 1914. Buildings of the Pacific Cable Board on Fanning Island. On the left is the office, bachelor's quarters in the centre and the superintendant's house on the right. On 7 September 1914, the Nurnberg accompanied by a collier ship, both flying the French flag, landed on Fanning Island. They were sent there by Vice Admiral Count von Spee to destroy the Cable Relay Station, cutting out the British communications network in the Pacific. Repairs to the cable were carried out quickly and communications were restored within a fortnight. (Donor J. Luscombe)
