Description

The Kent class cruiser HMAS Canberra (partly visible) leads two other warships in a calm sea. A sister ship of the same class, HMAS Australia, follows immediately astern. The other ship bringing up the rear is probably a RN County class cruiser, possibly HMS Devonshire. From the disposition of these ships in this wartime patrol, they were probably tasked together to protect Allied convoys in the Atlantic Ocean. HMAS Canberra was sunk on 9 August 1942 off Savo Island in the battle of Guadalcanal.
