Collection related to the service of 6324 Private William Charles Tooney, "C" Company, 1 Battalion, First World War.
Wallet 1 of 1 consists of copies (with typed transcripts) of letters to his family, written from England between October 1917 and April 1918. They relate to his stay in the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital (Dartford, Kent) and later period of convalescence, following active service on the Western Front (he was wounded at Bullecourt in May 1917 and again at Ypres in September). The letters provide insights to the British Home Front (notably details of a Zeppelin raid on London on 22 October 1917) and the resolve of an ordinary soldier in adversity, namely his war injuries and the personal tragedy of the death of his wife in Australia in early 1917. Collection also includes supplementary biographical information copies of discharge papers.
