Description

At sea off the NSW coast. Sailors from the Daring class destroyer HMAS Voyager recovering a 21 inch Mark 8 practice torpedo. The weapon is being winched onboard from a davit at the port torpedo waist. These torpedoes are used regularly to maintain the operational efficiency of the weapons systems. HMAS Voyager, with other ships, was undergoing intensive trials to prepare for a five month deployment to the Far East Strategic Reserve (FESR). HMAS Voyager was sunk in a collision with HMAS Melbourne on 10 February 1964 with the loss of 82 men.
