Karachi, India. c. 1945. The navigators of three of the RAF Mosquito aircraft on Mauripur airfield. Left to right: Warrant Officer (WO) F. J. Baylis; WO R. E. Smith DFM; Flying Officer L. G. E. Grover. A flight of 4700 miles from Benson, Oxfordshire, to Karachi, in an overall time of twelve hours twenty-five minutes at the mean average speed of 378 mph was completed by an RAF Mosquito aircraft piloted by Sqn Ldr K. J. Newman DFC and BAR and his navigator Warrant Officer R. E. Smith DFM. The Mosquito which was a standard reconnaissance aircraft carried full camera equipment. Three other Mosquito aircraft which had left Britain a day earlier also made the flight in less than thirteen hours.
