Description

Four crew members who between them have served 108 years in the RAN, and whose ages total 189 years, discuss their experiences on board HMAS Perth (II) D38 as the ship completes its second deployment with the US Seventh Fleet off the coast of Vietnam. The ship is either still at sea or docked at Garden Island, NSW. Left to right: R33969 Chief Petty Officer Quartermaster Gunner (CPOQMG) Gregory Ammerton 'Curly' Hanneford, age 42, service 25 years; R30813 Chief Petty Officer Radar Plotter (CPORP) Percival William (Perce) Jarrett, age 50, service 29 years; R40812 Chief Petty Officer Fire Control (CPOFC) Reginald George (Reg) Birch, age 49, service c25 years; and R34372 Chief Petty Officer Coxswain (CPOCOX) Samuel James Parke, age 48, service 29 years. During the tour of duty CPORP Jarrett celebrated his 50th birthday. CPOCOX Parke was wounded in the Perth's first deployment off Vietnam when a North Vietnamese coastal defence gun shelled the ship. The men are standing in front of the Perth's missile launcher.
