Description

A Fairey Gannet anti-submarine aircraft from the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne marks a new record having completed one thousand flying hours for 816 Squadron in a deployment to south east Asia. The eight aircraft were embarked from January to June 1962 playing a major role in the SEATO exercise Sea Devil. The event was marked by a ceremony onboard in which the squadron commanding officer, Lieutenant-Commander Ken Barnett (centre), presented a cake to the aircraft maintenance crew. Naval Airman Mechanic Francis Smith (left) of Blacktown, NSW accepts the cake while Lieutenant Peter Adams (right) of WA looks on.
