Description

The modified Leander class cruiser HMAS Hobart which saw service in East Africa and the Mediterranean before being ordered to Australian waters following Japan's entry into the war. After duty in the East Indies, Hobart returned to Australia and later took part in the Coral Sea battle, shooting down two Japanese aircraft. On 20 July, 1943, Hobart was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine suffering a number of casualties and extensive damage. Following temporary repairs, she was able to return to Sydney for refit and repairs before returning to service in 1945. She then participated in landings at Tarakan, Wewak, Brunei and Balikpapan. On 31 August 1945, Hobart joined the Allied fleet in Tokyo Bay for the surrender of Japan.
