Description
NT. October 1941. Members of the 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion travelling on top of the canvas roof (the 'observation car') of the cattle trucks which transported them from Birdum and Darwin in mid October. The carriages were very hot and many preferred the roof to sweltering inside. Identified in the foreground are WX8681 Private (Pte) Roy William (Bluey) Davey (died of illness on 1 July 1943 in Thailand) and WX8678 Pte Eric John Holst (died of illness on 20 March 1945 in Borneo), both as Prsoners of War (POWs).
