Description
Probably South America. c. December 1914. A picket boat from the battle cruiser HMAS Australia fitted with torpedo dropping gear cruises along, seven sailors sitting on the deck. Following action around Rabaul, HMAS Australia sailed to Fiji, remaining in the harbour in Suva until information received by the Admiralty indicated the German fleet was on the move and she would be sent to intercept them in South America. After travelling via the Galapagos Islands and not sighting them, the ship moved down the coast. While en route the crew heard of the action off the Falklands in which the German fleet had been intercepted. (Donor E. Gibson)
