Woolfox Lodge, England. c. 1944. Group portrait of the aircrew of No. 218 Squadron RAF in front of a Stirling bomber. The squadron was based at Woolfox Lodge, seven miles north of Stamford. 415242 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Noel Stirling Eliot, pilot, is fifth from left, second row. He was shot down on 1 May 1944 while on a bombing raid over the Chambly railway marshalling yards, north of Paris. He escaped by parachute and was put in contact with members of the Underground who helped him via the Comet (Comete) escape route which included safe houses and camps in the Forest of Freteval. Nine Australians were among 152 allied airmen who hid in the forest at these camps for approximately two months waiting for France to be liberated. (Donor N. Eliot)
