Description
Forest of Freteval, France. April 1980. Noel Eliot stands beside the memorial commemorating the participation of the Underground in setting up two camps in the forest where eventually 152 allied airmen were hiding between May and August 1944 waiting for liberation. The camps were part of the Comet (Comete) escape route. Nine Australian airmen hid in this camp, including 415242 Flight Lieutenant Noel Stirling Eliot RAAF, pilot of No. 218 Squadron RAF, had escaped by parachute from his Stirling bomber which was shot down on 1 May 1944 while on a bombing raid over the Chambly railway marshalling yards, north of Paris.
