Kampong Makassar, Batavia, Java. August 1945. The first pictures to arrive in Australia taken at Kampong Makassar the worst prison camp in Batavia, where 10,000 women and children internees were confinded in a space less than half a square mile. This is the most notorious internment camp in West Java. Here in a pitiful condition women and children are waiting for evacuation. This little girl of seven is dying in the camp hospital. Internee nurses are working 18 hour shifts to cope with the ever increasing flow of the sick. The child has been lying for weeks staring at the ceiling while doctors strive to save her life, but there is little they can do without proper medical attention which these internees are not receiving although Japan surrendered weeks ago.
