Description

Hadmersleben, Germany. 1 May 1933. A horse-drawn decorated cart driven by two men and displaying produce from a mill stopped by the side of the cobbled road, probably part of a May Day parade to give thanks for the harvest. A small number of men, including two in first world war uniforms, one of whom is wearing an Iron Cross, are standing beside the cart. The cart is decorated with shrubbery and includes a Swastika flag. The cart has a sign over it which reads 'Hadmersleben Muhlenwerke 1 Mai 1933' indicating it is a float from the Hadmersleben mill. This image indicates the early impact Nazism was making on small town life. (Donor P. Nixon)
