Description
At sea. c. 1916. Staff Nurse Dorothy Mary Burkitt AANS (front) takes part in a lifeboat drill on HMT Karoola. She and a number of other nurses are wearing their life jackets over their long nurses uniforms. The original album captions reads 'Five long blasts of the siren'. Staff Nurse Burkitt enlisted on 20 July 1915 and was discharged on 16 September 1916. The Karoola was initially used as a troop transport, but on arrival at Southampton, England, she was converted to a hospital ship, with accommodation for approximately 460 patients. As a hospital ship she made numerous voyages between England and Australia. (Donor L. Gibson)
