Description

Alexishafen, New Guinea. 2 May 1944. View from a motor launch (MLs) that, with two others, is making a sweep of the coast north of Alexishafen investigating positions thought to be Japanese gun positions. The photograph shows machine gun fire from the MLs landing on a group of huts and gun positions. The three MLs carried Army Officers to direct the ships fire. On the order the 2-pounder gun forward and the two Oerlikors guns amidships and aft, plus four Brownings on the bridge and the .50 calibre machine guns opened fire simultaneously. The positions were destroyed.
