Group portrait of British naval officers outside Admiralty House, Sydney, identified as Rear Admiral Pearson, Staff and Commanding Officers of Her Majesty's Ships - Australian Station - present at the inaugural ceremony. Most are wearing ceremonial frock coats and carrying swords. Identified, left to right, back row: Inspector of Machinery W Davis; Captain H L Royce; Secretary C J Ferguson; Commander R Tupper; Captain Kingsmill(?). Middle row: first three are unidentified; possibly the then Commander-in-Chief on the Australian Station (January 1898-January 1901), Rear Admiral Hugo L. Pearson, RN; Captain G Dicken; unidentified; Flag Lieutenant A C Stewart. Front row: unidentified; A/P Thring; A/P Batt; A/P Dowd; unidentified. Commanders Freeman, Combe and Ravenhill are believed to be present, but their position is unknown. The officer standing at the extreme right is wearing a set of gold braided aiguillettes signifying that he is probably his flag lieutenant or secretary.
