Description

Unidentified Australian soldiers establishing their sleeping shelters at Fire Support Base (FSB) Maree/Marie during Operation Ivanhoe (19 September - 2 October 1971). A Kiowa helicopter is visible (background) and a mechanical backhoe is being used to dig pits and trenches. the curved sections of corrugated drainage culvert will be erected over the pit (foreground) and then covered with a layer of sandbags, which will provide a degree of shelter to the occupant underneath it. Canvas and nylon hutchies and stacked ration boxes are also visible.
