Description

A view of three individual rest and sleeping shelters at Fire Support Base (FSB) Maree/Marie, during Operation Ivanhoe (19 September - 2 October 1971). To construct these shelters, a pit is dug and then covered over with sections of corrugated steel culvert, which in turn is covered with an external layer of sandbags and a nylon hutchie to keep moisture out. In this fashion, the occupant is able to shelter below ground level and the curved roof provides some degree of protection from blast and shell fragments in the case of a mortar attack against the FSB. Individual items, such as webbing, water bottles, food dixies and steel helmets are visible near the entrance to the shelters.
