Melbourne, Vic. c. 1967. A hand coloured studio portrait of Ethel Frances Hanrahan OBE, Senior Matron of the Repatriation General Hospital at Heidelberg. Note she is wearing her war service medals and her OBE. As a young nursing sister she enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) on 15 December 1939 and in May 1940 sailed with the 2/3rd Field Ambulance for service in England, where she was attached with the 2/3rd Australian General Hospital (AGH). In November 1940 she proceeded to the Middle East for duty with the 2/2nd AGH at Kantara, Egypt. In March 1942 she returned to Australia and over the next four years was appointed as matron at AGH Toowoomba, 116 AGH Charters Towers and Cairns (1944), 107 AGH Darwin and Principal Matron of the Northern Territory Force (1945) and finally in October 1945 to 112 Brisbane Military Hospital and Principal Matron, Headquarters, Northern Command. Early in 1947 Matron Hanrahan ceased service with AANS and took up an appointment as Senior Matron at Heidelberg. In 1963 she was awarded an Order of the British Empire in recognition of her services to nursing with AANS and the Repatriation Department. (Donor J.
