Description

1946. Portrait of QX19782 Sergeant (Sgt) John Keith Barrie MM. Sgt Barrie served as a member of Z Special Unit, operating behind Japanese lines in Borneo in Operation Semut. He was parachuted into Sarawak on 25 March 1945 with a party to establish an intelligence network and guerilla force. He was awarded his Military Medal for courage and ability in action and civil administration. On 3 July 1945, with an officer, he engaged a Japanese launch, and although lightly armed, forced them to withdraw, enabling the SRO party to become well-established in the area. Note he is wearing paratroop wings on his breast, indicating he has taken part in an operational jump, otherwise they would appear on his sleeve. An account of Sgt Barrie's experiences is held in the Research Centre at MSS1532. (Donor J. Barrie)
