Over New Guinea. c. 1944. Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Joseph (Joe) Richardson Palmer RAAF, pilot of No. 36 Squadron RAAF at the controls of a Beaufort aircraft. Flt Lt Palmer, known as 'Mass Production Joe', was a civilian pilot before he was called up on 12 August 1940, shortly before turning forty. He was appointed to a number of different Flying Training Schools, spent four months with No. 38 Squadron RAAF before joining No. 36 Squadron RAAF on 22 October 1944. He flew with this squadron for almost a year. Flt Lt Palmer was well known for having a very high number of flying hours logged. While still with No. 36 Squadron his Half Yearly Return of Flying Hours cites a total of 4652 hours as a grand total, of which 3,925.35 were as a pilot. (Donor A. Miller)
