Cripps, John (James) Clinch (Private)
Diary (188 pages) of Private John (James) Clinch Cripps, `B' Squadron, 1st NSW Mounted Rifle Regiment, kept while serving in the Boer War. It covers the period from his embarkation on the transport Southern Cross 18 January 1900 to his return to Australia 6 December 1900. The diary has detailed daily entries documenting anti-Boer operations, Cripps' part in them, the strategies of both sides, Cripps' observations of towns and countryside and the effects of the war on them, his impressions of fellow soldiers, and comments on major battles and developments in the war. There are many references to locations, events, units and leading figures (such as General Hutton). Added to this collection in July 2017 is a typed transcription of Cripps' handwritten diary, transcribed by Mr Rob Droogleever.
