Description
France. c. 1919. Miss Ethel Helena Ubsdell with her dog Zep on a snowy road in a French village, probably Sermaize les Bains. Zep was found after an air raid and from then on was Miss Ubsdell's companion. Zep was issued with a passport dated 21 February 1916 which gave permission for Zep to stay "with his family for the duration of the war" and in particular "the dog is authorized to travel in cars of the Society of Friends". Miss Ubsdell originally went to France with the Society of Friends' (Quakers) War Victim Relief, in November 1914. She then served two and a half years as a British nurse attached to the 36th French Army Corps before resuming her work with the Friends. (Donor B. Holt)
