Western Desert, Egypt. 5 November 1942. The Desert Air Forces of the Allies are operating a formidable number of aircraft. All day and during the night the air is alive with the drone of their engines as they keep up the terrific pressure of their attacks on the Axis. 800 sorties in daylight and 100 tons of bombs dropped at night is the daily average of our effort. Vickers Wellington bomber aircraft have done great work in this onslaught. Night after night they have flown on the mail run to pound the enemy's bases and harbours, keeping up the steady bombardment on his supplies and shipping. Some of our Wellingtons are lined up on a desert airfield before a raid. The aircraft on the right, serial no. Z8524, shows the number of missions on the nose, each raid marked by a symbol.
